Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

With the growing interest in recent years in the use of period instruments for recordings, live professional performances, and amateur music-making, the old-style transverse flutes are experiencing a remarkable comeback. The Early Flute is the first book in modern times to deal exclusively with the flutes used in the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical eras. The book details the history of the transverse flute from 1500 until the early nineteenth century. Advice is given on acquiring instruments and on their care and maintenance. Additional chapters guide the reader to sources about relevant technique and style, recommend repertoire, and give general advice to the modern player. The text is enhanced by numerous photographs of important historic flutes.

CHOICE Review

Although Solum's focus is not original research, his book is a significant addition to Oxford's "Early Music Series" because it consolidates so much information. Bibliographies and repertory lists identify suggested editions, composers, and flute makers. Historical chapters for Renaissance (by Anne Smith), baroque, and classical flutes take readers from early times to the advent of the Boehm (modern) flute. Solum also gives practical advice on technique and style and tips on "bringing it all to life." Modern flutists will find a guide to the purchase of an old flute or a replica. Photographs of important instruments illustrate the text. Although the primary use of this volume will be as an introduction for those already playing modern flutes (Solum gives the appropriate cautions about trying to learn from primary sources), the footnote references alone justify the purchase of this book by all serious music libraries. A worthy companion to the historical studies by Philip Bate (The Flute, 2nd ed., 1979) and Nancy Toff (The Development of the Modern Flute, CH, Nov'79). Both general and academic readers, undergraduates to professionals. J. P. Ambrose; University of Vermont
