CHOICE Review

As founder and director of the Concentus Musicus of Vienna for over 35 years, Harnoncourt has been one of the most important figures in the authentic instrument movement. His scholarly and thoughtful performances, particularly of the Bach cantatas, have shaped a whole generation's thinking about this repertory. For that reason, his thoughts are themselves a history of a particular area of performance practice in its formative years. The essays range in length from a single page to a full book chapter, but none is without an insight or suggestion for a new way to think about the three composers who have been the main concern of Harnoncourt's life as a performer and as a conductor. The essays on instrumentation and, more particularly, on winds are perhaps the most interesting and valuable. For professional musicians, students at all college levels, and general readers. -J. P. Ambrose, University of Vermont
