CHOICE Review

This subject encyclopedia provides 4,000 brief entries for people, organizations, place-names, and movements representing all continents and cultures. Some entries concerned with the evolution of organizations exhibit Eurocentric focus; for example, "Arms and Armor" and "Army" emphasize the development of western European armies. Cross-references are numerous. Variant spellings are generally cross-referenced to other forms, and Wade-Giles forms of Chinese names to their Pinyin equivalents. However, entries sometimes ignore terms or names discussed elsewhere in the volume. Entries are unsigned, and there is no roster of individual contributors. The Oxford dictionary is a handy supplement to several 1994 works, including The Hutchinson Dictionary of World History (CH, Apr'94) and Bruce Wetterau's World History: A Dictionary of Important People, Places and Events from Ancient Times to the Present (CH, Oct'94), but unlike them, Oxford lacks extensive chronologies. Oxford is more up-to-date, although it does not reflect recent changes since its publication: Vladimir Putin is not listed, and Syria's Hafiz al-Assad was alive when his entry was written.
