Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Though many artists are open to the idea of using more than one medium to achieve a desired effect, they are often unsure about how to do so successfully. This guide is for those who want to explore the creative possibilities beyond their preferred medium and combine two or more in their work. Detailed information is provided on many different mediums, including pastels, oils, watersoluble oils, acrylics, watercolor, gouache, printmaking, casein, egg tempera, and encaustic. Step-by-step demonstrations outlining potential combinations, archival applications, and safe handling techniques are presented.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 142) and index.

Library Journal Review

An outstanding contribution to the field, Dye's first book is a comprehensive and practical guide for exploring the creative possibilities of virtually every major art medium, save the newest digital art forms. Dye, a contributor to the Artist's Magazine, International Artist, and the Pastel Journal, begins with a brief historical overview of how and why different media and supports have been mixed. Examples from Filippino Lippi and Edgar Degas (who combined tempera and pastel in 1880) help illustrate the text. Subsequent chapters explain the origin, composition, and physical characteristics of drawing media, soft and oil pastels, oils, watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein and egg tempera, encaustic, and printmaking. Lively demonstrations and useful tips on archival applications and safe handling techniques round out this fine volume. The methods and techniques of each medium can be further explored with the help of Ray Smith's New Artist's Handbook, but this book stands on its own merits. Highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010.
