For many, photographs are taken as factual proof of real events. For others, the camera frame is an empty stage awaiting a created reality. In this accessible and gorgeous survey, four essays that unwind the history of photography from the latter viewpoint are illustrated by the wide-ranging work of 57 artists, among them Oscar Gustave Rejlander, Man Ray, and Cindy Sherman. Curators Pauli (Manufactured Landscapes: The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky), Ann Thomas (No Man's Land: The Photographs of Lynne Cohen), Karen Henry (Allyson Clay: Imaginary Standard Distance), and Marta Weiss (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) provide a stunning overview, covering everything from the earliest examples of staged photography, born of technical necessity in the 19th century, to the contemporary resurgence of the theatrical tableaux and staged imagery beginning in the 1980s and continuing today.
