CHOICE Review

This work offers a lush portrait of O'Keeffe's obsession with the geography and natural environment that fed her artistic vision. The book complements the exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Vancouver Art Gallery. It serves to remind viewers of O'Keeffe's skills as a painter (and lesser-known sculptor) of representation as much as of delectable abstraction. Three essays offer commentary. Of particular note is Scott's provocative analysis of O'Keeffe's development within the context of landscape history. In general, however, the absence of figure numbers within each essay makes it difficult to connect the authors' theses with the illustrated plates or the exhibition content. The small, in-essay reproductions provide immediate comparison with O'Keeffe's contemporaries, including de Kooning, Matisse, Rothko, and Warhol. Todd Webb's photographs of the artist and her studio serve as welcome interjections. The quality of the 77 full-page reproductions and the beautiful, clean design of the book provide stunning visual impact. The brief chronology is helpful, as is the select bibliography that provides a valuable guide to recent scholarship and primary documents. Summing Up: Recommended.
