CHOICE Review

Ashby provides rapid, graphical access to data making it easy to do a systematic search for the optimum material and process to use in mechanical design. A unique feature is the pictorial presentation of engineering data in such a way as to allow one to select the proper material and manufacturing process from the full range of materials available to an engineer. The author assumes that the reader has a basic knowledge of materials and mechanics and shows how to use this knowledge in materials selection. Case studies are included that illustrate the use of the selection charts; there are also extensive references. An excellent supplement to any materials book, such as Ashby and D. R. H. Jones, Engineering Materials-2 (1986) or K. G. Budinski, Engineering Materials (4th ed., 1992; 1st ed., CH, Oct'79).
