Booklist Review

Others may have their Lake Wobegon, complete with Powdermilk Biscuit T-shirts, but a not-so-tiny band of comic-strip aficionados gets its small-town yuks from the roomers at Bloom's Boarding House in ``the wilderness called Bloom County.'' The adventures of bespectacled Milo Bloom and anxiety-beleaguered Michael (``Mad Dog'') Binkley, of hopeless bachelor lawyer Steve Dallas (the quintessence of male chauvinism), of Bill the Cat (``a disgusting, slobbering slime bag,'' says friend Portnoy the groundhog), of a penguin named Opus, and their cronies are sort of like ``Doonesbury'' meets ``Looney Tunes.'' They unite the satire of Trudeau with the manic, nonstop madness of Bugs, Daffy, and Elmer. Breathed's daily cartoons are never just four panels leading up to a punch line. They are funny, outrageous, and as irreverent as your daily paper can probably tolerate (much of that irreverence at the expense of the press itself). This generous selection from the strip's first five years is a must for cartoon collections. RO. 741.5'973 [CIP] 86-14772

Berkeley Breathed is an American cartoonist, children's book author/illustrator, director, and screenwriter, best known for Bloom County, a 1980s cartoon-comic strip. Bloom County earned Berkeley the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. He replaced the Bloom County strip with the surreal Sunday-only cartoon, Outland in 1989, which featured some of the Bloom County characters. Eight years later, Berkeley began producing the comic strip, Opus, a Sunday-only strip featuring Opus the Penguin.

In addition to his cartoon work, he has also produced seven children's books, two of which, A Wish for Wings That Work and Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big, were made into animated films. Berkeley's writing has also been featured in numerous publications, including Life, Boating, and Travel and Leisure.

Berkeley lives with his family in Southern California.
