This catalog of a retrospective exhibition at New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a first-rate visual and intellectual survey of Richard Serra's (b. 1939) extensive sculptural career. Chief curator McShine provides a thoughtful and illuminating interview with the artist, and essays by critics Cooke, Benjamin Buchloh, and John Rajchman cover the artist's early work, his ideas about abstraction, and the potent relationships his work has to landscape. The 450 black-and-white illustrations are exceptional, giving some indication of the scale and mass of the works; some color illustrations, however-particularly for the works in landscape environments-would have been valuable. Despite MoMA's early recognition and championing of Serra, this catalog rises above any "official" endorsement to address his art directly. The most thoughtful and visually comprehensive book on the artist-and not quite as heavy as one of his sculptures! Serra (b. 1939) plays with steel the way Andy Goldsworthy plays with stones or Steven Holl plays with light--very seriously and as a space shaper. Furthermore, since Henry Moore's death in 1986, Serra has arguably become the most important sculptor on Earth. Evoking associations with early stone assemblages such as Stonehenge or Egypt's New Kingdom temples, Serra's forms incorporate nature's curvilinear elements, chthonic qualities, verticalities and angles, mathematical underpinnings, powers, and mysteries. Rich surfaces and suddenly revealed relationships inform works that are technically and conceptually challenging and transformative. The 326 works are reproduced in luscious black-and-white, many from their installations within the landscape, whether urban, backyard, or meadow. Bracketing the images are approximately 100 pages of text: foreword by Glenn D. Lowry (MoMA); acknowledgments by McShine (MoMA); "A Conversation about Work with Richard Serra" by McShine; "Richard Serra's Early Work: Sculpture between Labor and Spectacle" by Benjamin H. D.
