Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Written by a sports scientist, a coach and a physician, Swimming is the broadest work yet written in this field for sports science and sports medicine alike. The text is authored by a team with outstanding credentials in terms of personal experience as competitive swimmers, in research productivity, coaching success, and the medical care of high performance swimmers and swimming teams. Swimming has been written primarily for athletics trainers and team coaches but is also intended as a specialist reference for doctors, allied health professionals and for athletes themselves. Chapters cover the characteristics of swimming including important concepts in propulsion, functional anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics and psychology. Also included are the principles and aims of nutrition, injury including risks, mechanisms of injury, prevention, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation and return to training.

Includes index.

CHOICE Review

This book, which is sponsored by the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission, is a scientific presentation of the important factors related to competitive swimming. The authors are recognized national leaders in competitive swimming, exercise physiology, and sports medicine, and the volume is intended for athletic trainers, swimming coaches, primary care physicians, health-related professionals, and swimming athletes. It covers four distinct topics: physiology and biology of swimming; mechanical aspects of swimming, including detailed analysis of the four competitive swimming strokes, starts, and turns; physical training; and physiological and biomechanical evaluation, and medical aspects of swimming. A forerunner of this book was James E. Counsilman's classic The Science of Swimming (1968). The overall quality of writing, topic coverage, illustrations, and supporting references is outstanding. One weakness is that sequential illustrations of stroke mechanics do not have corresponding sequential written descriptions. This text is a scholarly presentation of the sport of competitive swimming and will be extremely useful to any interested reader.-A. W. Jackson, University of North Texas
