Elaydi offers an interesting and thorough overview of difference equations, then moves into some other more advanced topics. The book is aimed at upper-division undergraduates; it requires a background of calculus and linear algebra (the advanced topics also require some background in advanced calculus). It is generally well written, though at a fairly high level. The author has included many interesting and well-named examples, and numerous exercises--some easy, others more challenging. In terms of topics, the first four chapters discuss the basics of first-order difference equations, linear difference equations, systems of difference equations, and stability. Later chapters discuss control theory, Z-transforms, asymptotic results, and oscillation theory. A work that complements well other standard books on difference equations and related material.
