Hold The Passion tells the story of actress and teacher Deirdre O'Connell, who set up the Focus Theatre in Dublin in 1963. The film traces both the history of the theatre and of Deirdre's own artistic journey, which began in New York in the early 60's, when she studied with the legendary Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Deirdre then travelled to Ireland in 1963, determined to introduce the groundbreaking teachings of Strasberg and of Stanislavski to a new generation of Irish actors. A whole generation of Irish actors trained there: Gabriel Byrne, Tom Hickey, Johnny Murphy, Olwen Fouere and Paul Bennett. And many young playwrights found in the Focus Theatre an encouraging training ground for their emerging skills. Over the next four decades, the Focus Theatre staged more than 300 productions, ranging from classical to modern: from Ibsen, Chekhov and Strindberg, to Pinter, Lorca, Beckett and Eugene O'Neill, to contemporary classics by Arthur Miller, Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams, all performed by the theatre's resident ensemble of actors.
