CHOICE Review

This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum between October 2004 and February 2005. The exhibit is the "first retrospective ever of the pioneering artists' iconic as well as relatively unknown designs for everyday living," according to the museum Web site . Accordingly, this book is the first to examine the interior design work of Josef and Anni Albers, known chiefly as major abstract artists of the 20th century. The book includes two essays. "Designs for Living" by Weber (executive director, The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation) provides a colorful historical overview of the pair and their design interest in everyday objects, inspired by their observation that "art is everywhere." The other essay, "A Marriage of Two Minds: The Designs of Josef and Anni Albers" by architecture critic Martin Filler, analyzes the couple's wide-ranging artistic output. More than 150 exquisite illustrations document the legacy of the Alberses. Works include record covers, stained and sandblasted glass, postcards, kitchen utensils and tableware, textile arts, and furniture pieces. This is an essential addition for modern art and design collections. ^BSumming Up: Essential. All levels. E. H. Teague University of Oregon
