CHOICE Review

Built on earlier work by Forman and Michel Godron (Landscape Ecology, 1986) and the recent, vast literature in landscape ecology, Land Mosaics is comprehensive in scope. It provides useful discussions of terminology and paradigms of ecology at broader temporal and spatial scales. Forman encourages a thorough understanding of current models of landscape structure, relationships to ecological processes, and potential applications in natural resource management. Large volumes of theory are clearly presented in a narrative fashion with informative illustrations. The integration of ecological principles for design and management of landscapes and regions, understanding of human-induced change to the landscape, and sustainability of resource use are given more emphasis than in the authors' previous work. However, due to the broad nature of the book, the sense of landscape ecology as a scientific pursuit becomes less obvious. The list of references is outstanding, providing readers with further opportunities for literature search. An excellent resource for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, resource managers, and scientists in all fields of landscape ecology, biological conservation, and applied ecology. J.
