Libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece, based on St. John's Gospel, and the tradition of Christ's descent into Limbo, or "The Harrowing of Hell."
Includes facsimile of the original libretto (Rome, 1708).

Consists of 29 numbers in two parts. This was Handel's second Italian oratorio. It premiered on Easter Sunday in 1708, at the Palazzo Bonelli in Rome. This edition is based on autograph sources, as well as copyist's manuscripts.
