CHOICE Review

This very good publication is the most recent book on the use of the chemical literature, and the current choice in the field. The book is intended for the chemist, not the librarian. A wide range of computer and manual sources is covered briefly, using well-chosen search examples that will be easily understood by the undergraduate chemistry major. The explanation of searching CAS Online is the best one to appear in an elementary book; strangely, it omits the fact that the database is available to academic users at one fifth of the commercial rate. The explanation of using Beilstein is adequately clear and adequately detailed; however, it is hidden in the section on finding melting points. The nature of Beilstein, and most of the other printed sources, would be clarified by the inclusion of sample pages, as is done for the computer sources. Many subjects are treated too briefly: the section on patent searching fails to warn the beginner of the enormous cost of most of the databases cited; the discussions of related sources, such as Physics Abstracts and Index Medicus, are insufficient to explain their usefulness to the chemist; the discussion of nonbibliographic chemical computer systems is brief to the vanishing point; the use of the earlier literature is almost ignored; the problem of variant journal abbreviations is almost unmentioned; the single page on theses does not even mention that PhD theses are indexed in Chemical Abstracts; finally, the possibility of asking a librarian for anything except an online search has apparently never occured to the author. -D.
