Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

nbsp;An Actor's Work on a Role is Konstantin Stanislavsky's classic exploration of the rehearsal process, applying the techniques of his seminal actor training system to the task of bringing life and truth to one's role.

Originally published over half a century ago as Creating a Role, this book became the third in a trilogy - after An Actor Prepares and Building a Character, which are now combined in a newly translated volume called An Actor's Work. In these books, now foundational texts for actors, Stanislavsky sets out his psychological, physical and practical vision of actor training.

This new translation from renowned writer and critic Jean Benedetti not only includes Stanislavski's original teachings, but is also furnished with invaluable supplementary material in the shape of transcripts and notes from the rehearsals themselves, reconfirming The System as the cornerstone of actor training.

Includes bibliographical references.

Part I: Drafts 1929-1937 -- Part II: Historic documents 1885-1923.

CHOICE Review

Nothing in the realm of acting theory has received as much attention or caused as much aggravation as Konstantin Stanislavski's "system"--an enduring cornerstone of modern acting practice. In this new translation of Stanislavski's An Actor's Work on a Role, Benedetti seeks to shed light on Stanislavski's process of developing his system. The first third of the book presents Stanislavski's early drafts of his acting technique, using a semi-fictional form. While preparing Othello, director Tortsov (obviously Stanislavski) leads his actors through each step of the system. This incredibly practical, step-by-step process will benefit an actor at any point in his or her career. The second portion of the book (almost two-thirds of it) comprises historical documents from 1885 through 1923. This section provides a glimpse into the process that Stanislavski worked through as he attempted to outline his system. Both sections are succinct, providing just the right amount of background information for the casual reader to keep track of the historical context; the work of Stanislavski takes center stage once again in this sensible translation and compilation.
