Gr 2--5--Paintings and photographs of visual artists from various eras and cultures are presented in these volumes in which the artists provide their own first-person narratives. Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil employed a European style to paint Indian subjects, Carol Highsmith takes photographs of people and places in the United States; Clara Peters was a still life artist during the Renaissance; and photographer Dorothea Lange documented marginalized people of the Great Depression. Horace Pippin created powerful paintings of the early 20th-century Black experience; Ito Jakuchu employed contrasts in his paintings of birds; Shin Yun-Bok was a Korean painter of the Joseon period; and Ustad Mansur framed his nature paintings with beautiful borders. Emphasis is placed on the artwork, so readers looking for biographical information will be disappointed. However, as introductions to the art of lesser-known artists, these volumes do a fine job. Paintings and photographs are reproduced well. VERDICT These titles will enhance art appreciation for young readers and should be considered for purchase.
