Now that Chagall is dead, we can anticipate plenty of books and articles that will further inflate the myth this artist became years ago. But while we brace ourselves for the worst, let us be glad we now have an excellent text that reflects the best of Chagall. Compton's work is a catalog of an exhibition held in April 1985 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Compton is knowledgeable and discerning in probing the background and meanings of Chagall's art. Norbert Lynton's essay is equally insightful. Then there are the reproductions: plentiful, good quality, accompanied by brief and informative commentaries. Though Franz Meyer's lengthy study of Chagall (Marc Chagall: Life and Work, CH, Jun '64) remains unique for its comprehensiveness, Compton's book, addressed to readers seeking to experience Chagall more quickly, well deserves a place on the shelf right next to Meyer's.
