A beautifully illustrated collection of photographs by one of the major architectural photographers of the mid-20th century, this volume also includes short essays by critics, historians, and the photographer's daughter Erica, who is director of the agency that still handles his work. Stoller (1915-2004), who photographed many of the major examples of the heyday of modern architecture, and his work are discussed briefly by architectural critic/curator/educator Rappaport, Erica Stoller, Andy Grundberg (formerly of The New York Times and now head of the photography department at the Corcoran College of Art and Design), John Morris Dixon (former editor of Architectural Forum), and design/culture writer Akiko Busch. Included are a detailed chronological listing of Stoller's subjects and a time line of his equipment. But the real value of the book lies in the superb photographs, grouped under "Architectural Photography," "Man and Machine," and "Capturing House and Home." They demonstrate Stoller's accomplishments as an artist and the way that he captured a whole generation of architects' contributions to the built environment of the middle decades of the 20th century.
