CHOICE Review

Here is an anthology of plays and criticism that all teachers of drama should take seriously. The fresh angles and approaches the volume offers on topics such as naturalism, the historical avant-garde, and breakthrough works by innovative performance artists (e.g., Laurie Anderson, SuAndi) all argue in favor of this collection as required reading in courses on modern stagecraft. Those who need more convincing should take note of the book's organization. Each section begins with a meaty, informative essay. Each section includes striking visuals from performances in, for example, Toronto, Stockholm, and Berlin (the last of a German production of Chekhov's Three Sisters). The Ibsen Theater in Skien, Norway, supplied a shot from a 2006 production of Ibsen's When We Dead Awaken, which the editors reprint in lieu of oft-anthologized works (A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler). The first play provided in full, Emile Zola's Therese Raquin--in which the author deliberately omitted the contrivances dominating the French stage of the day--prefigures the book's emphasis on drama's ability to rouse, refresh, and renew the soul. The reader is also shown modes of dramatic expression benefiting from the effects of the Internet, the World Wide Web, and even the cell phone. This is up-to-date stuff. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. P. Wolfe University of Missouri--St. Louis
