Exploring the rich artistic and cultural histories of mythology and metaphor, spirituality and social connection, and the interplay between the applied and experimental, Art and Textiles is an extended exhibition catalogue from the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Through a series of essays and 400 illustrations, the book uses intellectual and visual breadth to argue for textiles' preeminent contributions to the birth of abstraction. It leads readers through the exhibition's objects, ideas, and driving themes, including the floor plans of the exhibition-specific architectural design. Using an interdisciplinary approach that explores the development of modern and contemporary Western aesthetics, the exhibition juxtaposes textiles from across time, region, and materials with paintings, sculptures, and installations. Artists from across Europe and the US are emphasized, but a strong intercultural dialogue that includes Africa, Asia, and South America is included. Providing a forceful argument for the reconsideration of textiles within the canon of art history and new curatorial approaches, this expanded exhibition catalogue makes a very valuable contribution to the dialogue about the development of and experiences with contemporary art.
