Summary: One of the most remarkable examples of André Malraux's attempts to transform the aesthetic face of Paris was his commissioning of visionary Russian-born artist Marc Chagall to paint a new ceiling for the century-old Paris Opera House. Malraux's choice was an inspired one; the familiar drab and gloomy ceiling has been replaced with a magic canvas, an orchestration of brilliant, swirling colors dedicated to the ballet and the opera. The distinguished French art critic Jacques Lassaigne describe the magnificent building that houses this ceiling and architect Charles Garnier's Second Empire design and construct.
