Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Taking an original, imaginative approach to the subject, Stephen Elliott's book is one of the first to bridge the gap between solid state physics and chemistry. Considerable thought has gone into the structure and content of this book, with the first four chapters covering the properties of atoms in solids and the remaining four concentrating on the behaviour of electrons in materials. Fundamental principles are covered together with the very latest developments, such as combinatorial library synthesis, mesoporous materials, fullerenes and nanotubes, optical localization and the experimental observation of fractional electronic charge. Clearly written and richly illustrated, The Physics and Chemistry of Solids will be of great interest to Physicists, Chemists, Material Scientists and Engineers.

CHOICE Review

Elliot's excellent book, written as a text, will be useful as a resource in science and technology libraries. It covers many topics, both classical and current, from theoretical and practical standpoints. Eight chapters describe the synthesis, structures, defects, dynamics, properties, and applications of solid-state materials. Each chapter begins with a detailed table of contents (it would have been more helpful if they had been placed in the main table of contents) and ends with an extraordinary set of problems (including essay questions) and a representative list of references to both the primary and secondary literature. There is a ten-page listing of abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols used in the text, along with separate chemical compound and subject indexes. The material is presented clearly with many equations (and their derivations) and explanatory figures. Both idealized and real materials are described, with a number of the subjects so new they have not yet been treated in other books. This book should be available to solid-state chemists, condensed-matter physicists, and material scientists and engineers. It is a successful attempt to cover both the chemical and physical aspects of the broad solid-state field (except for surfaces). Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. R.
