Library Journal Review

W.G. Sebald's (1944-2001) novel The Rings of Saturn (1995) is structured around a walking tour of Suffolk, England, describing the character W.G. Sebald's reaction to things he sees and people he meets, frequently spinning off on historical or literary tangents. Black-and-white photos illustrate the text, though their meaning is not always readily apparent. In Patience (After Sebald), a number of writers react to the novel, and the film shows us many of the places the novel describes, often in footage as oblique as the book's photos. Fans will be entranced, while the uninitiated may well dismiss this as pretentious blather. VERDICT Though the devotion the novel has inspired is undeniable, this remains a very specialized work most suitable for academic libraries, or public libraries with a critical mass of enthusiastic Sebald readers.-John Hiett, formerly with Iowa City P.L.
