CHOICE Review

Histories of classical choral music are not numerous, and that fact makes this book and its companion volume, Choral Music in the Twentieth Century (CH, Apr'03, 40-4520), especially welcome. A veteran choral director, Strimple (USC) provides an overview of the most important 19th-century choral works from Europe and the Americas. He does not limit coverage to major countries, but also includes Baltic and Scandinavian countries, and many countries in the Americas. Because it is not overly technical, this book is appropriate for anyone with a serious interest in choral music. It could serve as a textbook in courses on choral repertory, and will be a helpful tool for choral directors seeking to enhance their choirs' repertories. The book concludes with a list of works for various types of choruses and a lengthy bibliography. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic and public libraries with significant music collections. Nick Strimple (Los Angeles'), 'a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music since 1995, is a distinguished lecturer, composer, conductor, and scholar. He has appeared as a guest conductor with distinguished international ensembles and has recorded critically-acclaimed CDs of choral music by 20th-century American composers.
