Library Journal Review

This work will be most immediately compared, not entirely unfavorably, with two other recent dictionaries: Susan Mayhew's 1997 publication of the same title (Oxford Univ.) and Audrey Clark's Penguin Dictionary of Geography (1998). The current volume is the most expensive of the bunch. Its definitions tend to run about the same in length as in Mayhew'sÄbut not always: "cartography," for example, gets a one-line definition in Skinner's work but 11 lines in Mayhew's. And overall, Skinner has chosen fewer words to define. But his typeface is larger and thus easier to read; and the accompanying illustrations are clear and easy to understand. For general readers and undergraduates.ÄMary Lynette Larsgaard, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

This dictionary provides definitions for words in physical, economic, and historical geography, as well as information about famous geographers, but despite its generic title, it does not include place-names. Each entry is defined with a complete sentence, and the concept is then elaborated in one or more sentences, many accompanied by examples and illustrations. This makes its approach more user-friendly than the abbreviated phrases of standard dictionaries (e.g., Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary, 3rd ed., 1997). Where words have multiple senses, only those with significance for geography are included. Cross-references are printed in italics, and acronyms are given see references. Unfortunately, cross-references to illustrations are not included. A valuable resource for readers of elementary to advanced textbooks and journal articles, recommended for all academic and public libraries. J. A. Coombs; Southwest Missouri State University
