CHOICE Review

This reviewer finds little value in the book under review, whether considered in terms of the publisher's weak foundation or the resulting printed text. This is not, however, to fault the contributors. The problem they allegedly address is ill-defined (overly complex and broad), and coherent solutions in terms of a "research agenda" are hard to find. Sage (independent scholar) has gathered a group of academics from primarily one country--many from one university--to address what he describes as a global issue: "present arrangements [for] production, supply, and dietary practices around food are far from satisfactory" (p. xix). The limited representation of geographically diverse, expert subject matter voices--beyond those few who have done academic research--reduces the resulting text to one resembling theoretical speculation between professors and grad students. Given the scope of the topic, representatives from a broad range of agricultural and logistics or transportation sectors should have at least as much voice as sociologists or urban planners. The value of this book unfortunately seems to be to highlight a small group of academics who want to follow du jour green or climate change alarm research methods. The text does not convey the sense of pragmatic research that might represent a meaningful step in the very generalized direction that it voices.
