Trying to maneuver through the Internet is like deep-sea diving for pearls. First you have to locate an oyster bed, then you have to start opening oysters to find a pearl. This manual from Internet World is a map to the Internet beds; it's up to the reader to skim for pearls. Like Internet: Mailing Lists, 1993 (Professional Reading, LJ 5/15/93), it serves as a guide to ``a mind-boggling array of information, services, and resources'' on the Internet, listing Internet and Usenet discussion groups, electronic journals, selected FTP sites, various freenets, and WAIS (wide area information servers)-accessible databases. CHOICE Review

Claiming to be the most comprehensive reference to Internet to date, this guide contains almost 6,000 entries on resources ranging from discussion lists and newsgroups to searchable databases, both commercial and free. The strength of the work lies in the two chapters on discussion lists and electronic newsletters/journals. They are formatted for quick, readable, easy access and expand on another handy source, Internet: Mailing Lists, ed. by E.T.L. Hardie and V. Neou (1993). The section on campus-wide information systems should be expanded in promised annual editions; the wealth of information available through these systems across the country and the world has yet to be properly documented. An appendix that showcases the discussion list review service run by Raleigh Muns (Univ. of Missouri) introduces one means of evaluating the quality of discussion groups. In May, 1993, the publisher electronically requested entries for inclusion in this work, opening heated debate regarding the ethics of compiling information freely available over the Internet and publishing it in print. This work clearly fulfills the need for a paper guide to an electronic world. An essential resource that will stand well next to Ed Krol's The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog (1992). J. H.
