CHOICE Review

McKinnon (Northeastern University) and Bruns (Harvard Business School) explore the sources and uses of managerial information. Summarizing responses to interviews and questionnaires from 73 US and Canadian managers in sales, marketing, production, accounting, and information systems, the authors find that traditional generally accepted accounting reports are less important to the day-to-day decision-making process than are the self-developed management information systems. Timeliness as well as interpersonal communication and direct observation appear as significant as contemporary technology in conveying decision-making information. The report begins with an examination of the kinds of information required by managers and continues with an analysis of where managers find their decision data and the way in which information can be made more useful for managerial activities. The writing style is straightforward with excellent use of quotations and examples. Appendixes include the research methodology, the interview protocol, and a questionnaire survey.
