CHOICE Review

Finding a better-qualified scholar than Rainey (Univ. of York, UK) to compile an anthology of literary modernism would be difficult. He has written or edited some half dozen books on the subject, most recently his Revisiting "The Wastland" (CH, Nov'05, 43-1428) and an edition of that work, The Annotated "Waste Land" with Eliot's Contemporary Prose (CH, Oct'05, 43-0787). The present volume reprints, in their entirety (with the exception of a chapter from Finnegans Wake), works of 23 English and American modernists. Preceding these is a section titled "Continental Interludes," which includes writing by exponents of futurism, dadaism, surrealism, and members of the Frankfurt School. Rainey represents novelists by short fiction or essays or both; among the longer works are Virginia Woolf's Between the Acts, Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, and--inevitably--T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. He also includes authors who have enjoyed considerable recent attention--e.g., Ford Madox Ford, Mary Butts, H.D. Rainey introduces the volume with a discussion of the history of modernism, its leading interpreters, and its various definitions. These materials, in addition to writings themselves and the extensive secondary bibliography, make this a valuable reference as well as textbook (its intended use). Lawrence Rainey is Professor of English at the University of York. He is the founding editor of the journal Modernism / Modernity, and his essays and reviews have appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books and The Independent. He is the author of Ezra Pound and the Monument of Culture (1991), Institutions of Modernism: Literary Elites and Public Culture (1998), and Revisiting 'The Waste Land' (2005). He has also edited The Annotated Waste Land with Eliot's Contemporary Prose (2005).
