CHOICE Review

This collection of 12 essays edited by Joseph (Univ. of Cyprus) deals with various aspects of Turkish relations with the European Union. Contributors are mostly Turkish and Greek scholars with a smattering of Americans, generally not among the most prominent scholars in the field. The level of competence is quite high, although at least one is so obsessed with his subject he pursues it down a bypath (Israeli involvement with the Kurds of Iraq) that has virtually nothing to do with Turkey and the EU. The occasional inevitable overlap among chapters is not objectionable. Contributions by Nathalie Tocci, Tozun Bahceli, and Omer Taspinar are especially insightful. The authors seem to agree that relations among Turkey, the EU, and the US form a triangular structure that has undergone considerable stress, especially with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of international terrorism, and the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. The contributors predict a delicately balanced outcome, with the prospects of Turkish accession to the EU in doubt, and the relations between Turkey and the US seriously damaged.
