CHOICE Review

Although this book includes theoretical and background information on light microscopy in general, it is particularly helpful as a hands-on guide. As the subtitle ("Introduction to Biotechniques") indicates, the book is written primarily for biologists. It offers many practical and valuable details, including tips that are rarely published, and is useful for both new users of research microscopes, such as graduate students, and seasoned microscopists. Many of the examples and hints utilize botanical subjects, but Rawlins is general enough in his treatment to make his book interesting for all biologists. Valuable also because it is very current and comprehensive; for example, the book considers not just confocal laser scanning microscopy, but special computer techniques for quantitative and three-dimensional analyses. Two other pluses: a wide range of techniques are considered and, in some cases, specific proprietary equipment is evaluated.
